The Egyptian Accreditation Council was established by Presidential Decree No. 312 in 1996. It serves as the sole national body authorized in the Arab Republic of Egypt to evaluate, assess, and accredit conformity assessment bodies. These bodies include testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies for management systems, medical testing laboratories, product certification bodies, technical proficiency testing service providers, proficiency testing bodies, personal certification bodies, halal certification bodies, forensic laboratories, and biobanks laboratories.
In 2006, Presidential Decree No. 248 was issued to reorganize the Egyptian Accreditation Council (EGAC) and grant it technical, administrative, and financial independence to assess and accredit conformity assessment bodies in Egypt. The authority of EGAC is derived from the state, emphasizing its role as a government organization affiliated with the Ministry of Trade and Industry. EGAC operates as a non-profit organization.
